A green route through Drenthe

From Hooghalen you ride into the nature of the Drenthe countryside for a nice route. On a narrow bike path you will ride through woods and over heathland. It is an area with history and you can probably feel that. There is little difference in altitude in this part of Drenthe. Only the edges of the province are lower. When you leave the trees behind you are treated to vistas over grasslands and fields. Drenthe is the least densely populated province of the Netherlands and it shows. You can enjoy the tranquility without cycling through the built-up areas of various villages. Only the places Elp and Hijken you drive a little through. Hooghalen lies above a salt drain. This is a structure in the subsoil consisting mainly of salt. This phenomenon occurs when heavier liquids come to lie on lighter ones. Salt is lighter and has come to lie high because of the heavier rock. However, it does not rise above the ground.
