Cycling along moors and fens

In the east of Friesland, between Allardsoog and Oosterwolde lies a beautiful part of Friesland, characterized by its marshy fens interspersed with meadows, dunes and forests. The Fochteloerveen is a 2500 ha nature reserve a beautiful raised bog area in the Netherlands. The small lakes and fens in the Blue Forest near Waskemeer are also worth visiting. Furthermore, there are many sheep and even wild horses in the area. In the vast meadows Exmoor ponies and Scottish Highlanders roam undisturbed. Among the typical Frisian villages and hamlets you can even find a brink village, but there are also burial mounds in the area. Large country houses with orchards complete the picture. It is not for nothing that it is a common area for excursions, which are regularly organized there. Near Allardsoog you can still find a large, deep road that connected the three northern provinces during the Middle Ages and was much used by traders. But traces of war can also be found in this quiet part of the Netherlands. You cycle past the black dike entrenchment in Een. This dates from the time of the 80-year war.
