Cycling along the Green Heart and Airport Landscape
Enjoy the unique contrast between green fields and the dynamic environment of the airport
The bicycle route through the Green Heart and Airport Landscape passes through a beautiful contrast between rural tranquility and modern activity. The tour winds through vast polders, past historic villages and over quiet dikes where the Dutch landscape is at its most beautiful. Narrow roads and wide bike paths offer views of meadows, ditches, rows of pollard willows and characteristic ribbon buildings.
Along the way, cyclists pass through the dynamic area around Schiphol Airport, where the hustle and bustle of the airport and the impressive view of planes taking off and landing make for a unique experience. At various places along the route are spotting sites where aircraft enthusiasts can indulge their passion. At the same time, the landscape remains surprisingly green and open, with quiet roads and views of vast fields.
Around Aalsmeer, the route leads through the watery area of the Westeinderplassen, known for its attractive bridges and flowery shores. Near Vijfhuizen, the Fort van Vijfhuizen, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam (UNESCO World Heritage Site), is an interesting place to stop for a break. The bike ride takes you further along the historic ribbon village of Lijnden, across the Ringvaart canal and through the open landscape of the Haarlemmermeer.
Along the route there are plenty of opportunities to take a break on a waterside terrace, in a tea garden or at one of the forts. The combination of nature, water, culture and the view of the airport make this route particularly varied. The open character of the landscape provides vistas and space, while the proximity of Schiphol Airport provides a spectacular and lively backdrop.
