Route around the Black Lake

A hefty route through typical Overijssel countryside with water and vistas.
You are going to ride a wonderful bicycle route from Genemuiden through the landscape of Overijssel and over water. Therefore, don't forget to bring a euro p\/p for the ferry! Genemuiden is an old city but due to the many city fires, few historic buildings remain. In 1740 there was a smoking ban on public roads. There are still haystacks on the Achterweg, which you are cycling along, so this ban still applies here. This is unique in the Netherlands. You cycle to the ferry and can enjoy the peace and quiet on the water during the crossing. After the beautiful views across meadows and past farms and ditches, you will ride into the National Park Weeribben-Wieden. From open water to swamp forest, from fish to mammals, you can see it all here. In the 12th century, ditches were dug to drain the area to make it suitable for habitation. When it was discovered that dried peat could serve as fuel, peat extraction became the main livelihood. Ribs' are the narrow strips of land on which the dredged peat was laid out to dry. The route continues along the Black Lake. This lake can be characterized as rather shallow because it is no deeper than one to two meters. Through polders and along lakes and streams you can enjoy this typical Overijsselian landscape.
