The Sneeker route

A route through Sneek and the Sneekermeer lake.
Friesland is a country all its own, people sometimes proudly say. And in Sneek you can see that reflected, or hear it reflected, rather. Here they speak their own dialect Frisian. And that they are proud of their culture is quite understandable. The famous Beerenburg, shipbuilding and not to forget the helmet of 'Grutte Pier' are some of the things Sneek has had to offer for centuries. The Waterpoort is surely the symbol for Sneek. Definitely worth a look. Besides the cultural sights that can be admired in the town and in several museums, the area is especially known for its water sports. There are regular events on the Sneekermeer lake that can make it great fun for spectators as well. Cycling along the lake you can sometimes enjoy dozens of sailboats making their way through the water. Much of the area is under the management of Staadsbosbeheer which means there is plenty of nature to enjoy. For a bit of childhood nostalgia, I recommend taking a look at the area around Terhorne. The route goes straight through it. For readers of the children's book series De Kameleon, this is probably a recognizable area!
