Wide vistas of the Frisian landscape

During this special, expansive bicycle tour through municipality De Friese Meren, recreational cyclists can become acquainted with many other aspects of the special landscape
Municipality of the Frisian Lakes has no less than 51 cores and villages, which took shape after a long redivision in 2013. Some of those spots adorned with beautiful names are located on this 35-kilometer route with start and finish in hamlet Legemeer. The first part of this route goes around the Langweerderwielen, a recreational water area that is connected to the rest of watery Friesland via the Prinses Margrietkanaal, among other things. The views here are magnificent and the Dutch cloudscapes unparalleled. In the village of Langweer stands the Osinga State, the beautiful old town hall of the former municipality of Doniawerstal. The Langweerderwielen lake is only about three by one kilometers and was completely dredged as recently as 2016 to keep the lake navigable, with many positive effects on flora and fauna. In the village of Boornzwaag on the north side, the beautiful Sweachmermolen, dating from 1782, warrants a recreational visit. After the hamlets of Scharsterbrug and Herde, we skirt the Tjeukemeer on this route and turn to Follega, a place with a piece of history because of a bridge that was the scene of a battle between the English and French armies around 1800. The tour continues through the village of Spannenburg, with the tallest tower in the province of Friesland, used for telecommunications. The last part of the route passes through Idskenhuizen, a village with a history dating back to the fifteenth century and whose name has already undergone a dozen mutations.
