A bicycle route through the Frisian countryside around Franeker
Cycling along meadows, over dikes and through dunes and picturesque villages.
From the Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium, cycle through the center of Franeker. For a look at the oldest working solar system from 1774, you can enter here. The city is thought to have originated as early as around 800. In 1585, Franeker received a University in gratitude for its loyalty to William of Orange. Except for the University of Leiden, it was the oldest in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, the curtain fell on the university in 1842. Through the city park, you drive into the province of Friesland. With activity on one hand and fields and meadows on the other, you can enjoy what Friesland has to offer. Southwestern Friesland is characterized by its open character with meadows, dikes and picturesque villages. Originally, the province has an agricultural character and was known for its cattle breeding and dairy industry. When you have cycled through the dunes and reached Harlingen, it is probably time for a break. The harbor and the center offer plenty of opportunities for this. You continue the route through the coastal region along vast fields. Occasionally, the tranquility of nature merges with the quiet of one of the Frisian villages. After a nice bike ride, you will return to the city of Franeker.
