A bike route with lots of water around Kaag and Braasem

You start the bicycle route at the water, you cross the water and cycle along it. Already after the first meters you cross the Paddegat with the ferry. Later you will take the ferry again. Make sure you have some change in your pocket! The route goes along the vast meadows and the Braassemermeer which is largely protected by trees. In the south of the lake is the nature reserve De Hemmen which consists of six islands. The islands are home to many species of birds. From birds of prey to spotted woodpecker, the warbler, herons and many more. Through the polders it goes along the Langeraarseplassen. This moorland is also home to many birds as well as frogs and toads including the rare natterjack toad. The lakes are popular with anglers as bream can reach large sizes. Meandering along the Amstel River, you head north. On nice days you won't drive here alone, but the views are worth sharing. Where North, South Holland and Utrecht intersect, you swing west. Along the Westeinderplassen you cycle towards Leimuiden. Pike, eel and the rare European catfish swim in these lakes. The islands are mostly privately owned. Via the ferry at Oude Wetering you sail back to the side from which you started.
