A substantial bicycle route across the island of IJsselmonde
Mileage along De Oude Maas and special places like the largest shunting yard in the Netherlands.
From Ridderkerk starts the bicycle route through South Holland. Ridderkerk is located on the island of IJsselmonde and belongs to the Rotterdam City Region. Once you have passed under the freeway you will drive parallel to the freeway. Even though you are cycling, it is nice to know that the shortest highway in the Netherlands runs here: the A38 is 1.5 kilometers short. Cycling along the Nieuwe Maas you will reach Slikkerveer where you can turn off to Kinderdijk. This does require additional tickets. Via the center of Ridderkerk, you ride into the polder. The Waal, in the people's basket Het Waaltje is a dead river arm through the island, with a recreational area Sandelingen-Ambacht on the edge. This is where you will cycle through. Between Barendrecht and Zwijndrecht you pass marshalling yard Kijfhoek. With fifty hectares and 43 distribution tracks with rail brakes, this is the largest (and now almost the only) marshalling yard in the Netherlands. Along here lies the young Develbos. A paradise for ducks and reed birds. Along the dike on the Oude Maas the route leads to the outskirts of Barendrecht. Here a lot has been built on the water which gives a Venice feeling. Riding along green winding paths, it seems as if you are cycling abroad in the Randstad. You will experience the ultimate vacation feeling.
