Around the Schoorl Dunes

The coastal components, beach and dunes will always remain a great attraction and, under the motto 'get a breath of fresh air', no type of weather is unsuitable for sporting activities here. This route includes a route through the towns of Egmond aan de Hoef, Bergen (inside), Bergen aan Zee and Schoorl, where you will find plenty to enjoy as a cyclist and nature lover. The wide views of the North Sea are interspersed with more sheltered parts of the dune area, which has largely recovered from the dune fires in 2010 and 2011. Although Schoorl contains many vacation accommodations, there are still plenty of interesting sights, including the villa Spannenburg, several stolp farmhouses and the famous Klimduin, with its 51 meters the highest dune in the Netherlands. Bergen is also an interesting village on this route, including a visit to the remarkable Ruinekerk (ruined church). The origins of this church go back to the 10th century, but due to all kinds of destruction, the current version dates from much later. A special mention also deserves the dune area De Kerf, between Schoorl and Bergen aan Zee. To the regular dune vegetation, even heathlands occur here, a peculiarity for the coastal region.
