Beautiful round of cycling through the Alblasserwaard

The starting point of this long ride is at Oud Alblas, where the first windmill blades of the route soon become visible via a pair of polder-type specimens. After about six kilometers we arrive in Kinderdijk, where no less than nineteen windmills flaunt the Unesco World Heritage List. The origin of the name Kinderdijk is questionable, but is attributed, among other things, to a filial family from the sixteenth century. Via Nieuwlekkerland we cycle along the banks of the Lek in a northeasterly direction to the village of Streefkerk, with corn mill De Liefde and the marina as special attractions. After fourteen kilometers, Nieuwpoort is an important garrison town from the early Middle Ages, with beautiful ramparts as attractions. The views throughout the route are downright picturesque and the area is pre-eminently a haven for a huge variety of water and meadow birds, such as geese, black-tailed godwits and redshanks. Halfway along the route we leave the Lek behind us and the route continues inland through, among other places, the village of Goudriaan, picturesquely situated on the river of the same name. A large number of ditches and canals determine the landscape here until the end, with repeatedly beautiful views of meadows and pollard-willows.
