Bicycle route around Bakkeveen

From peaceful Bakkeveen, you drive into the equally peaceful surroundings of Friesland. This wooded area with heath and sand plains gives you the most beautiful views. The Bakkeveen Dunes are a Natura 2000 area and thus protected nature reserve. On the heathland you may encounter sheep grazing the area. They come from the sheepfold Allardsoog where you will also pass. Exmoor ponies and Scottish Highlanders also roam freely. You drive through Bakkeveen past landhui De Slotplaats, now a teahouse. The Slotplaats forest has a starry castle; a classic garden with moat and stately beech avenues. There are beeches as old as 250 years. Step off and see in how many steps you can walk around such a thick tree. Through the woods and over heathland, through the grasslands and dunes, you will be treated to a magnificent piece of Friesland.
