Bicycle route from Midlaren

On the upper part of the Hondsrug lies the commuter town of Haren, a suburb of the capital city of Groningen. This route takes you through the south of the province of Groningen and a bit of Drenthe. The route goes just far enough to include a few more dolmens. Besides the dolmens, Roman excavations and the medieval 'highway' through the Appelbergen forest, there is much more cultural beauty to see such as the Polder Mill, the Mill De Hoop and the Nicolaaskerk in Haren. This church tower has burned down repeatedly until an octagonal wooden spire, covered with slates was put on top. A rare tower in the Netherlands, and well worth seeing. Although there are many more traces of antiquity to be found, the area has also experienced tremendous development in recent decades in the form of modern residential areas and clean nature. For example, the Noordlaarderplas and the Drentsche Aa have lots of space for recreation and water sports. Along the many waters, artificial peninsulas have been placed on which villas have been built. Besides being a beautiful place to live, this is also good news for bird lovers. After all, where there is a lot of water, there are also a lot of birds. In short, this is an excellent route for when you are on vacation in the area.
