Bicycle tour through the Biesbosch

On this route you will witness a unique piece of the Netherlands. The Biesbosch is even a unique piece of Europe. This protected nature reserve is the largest freshwater tidal area in Europe. Because of its connection to the North Sea, there is even ebb and flow here, resulting in very beautiful panoramas. There is also beautiful flora and fauna to enjoy. Even the unique spindle otter is found here, a plant that has adapted to the tidal change. Of course, the Biesbosch is famous for the beaver, which is found here in large numbers. Their dammed habitat allows other animals such as foxes, deer, pine martens and the root vole to live in this wet area. Birds such as the kingfisher, nightingale, bluebird, spoonbill and bald eagle also make the area a must visit for bird lovers. The de-poldering of the Noordwaard makes it possible to drain the excess water in the surrounding area. This makes for beautiful scenes in winter. After all, the tour passes through the southern point of the New Dutch Waterline. The Fort near the Steurgat in Werkendam is also part of this. The route also passes by Gorinchem, a fortified town with a lot of history. Definitely worth biking past!
