Bulbs and dunes in South Holland

From Voorhout it is a nice start to explore the Dune and Bulb Region. The Bulb Region is characterized by broad sand ridges (remnants of sand mining for urban development) and geest grounds (sand mixed with clay or peat for the bulb fields). This is interspersed with meadows and dunes. The region is especially famous for its tulips, crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths. You can see straw on the land. The bulbs then sit in the ground, protecting them from frost. When it warms up in the spring, the bulbs start brewing under the straw, causing the bulb to rise again. At Keukenhof, you can enjoy as many as 800 different varieties of tulips, flower shows and more from mid-March to mid-May. Through the bulb fields around Noordwijkerhout, drive along the Oosterduinsemeer to the dunes. Through the chic boulevard of Noordwijk aan zee, it continues through the dunes to Katwijk aan zee. Parallel to the inland waterway and the harbor of the Oude Rijn, you will pass through the bulb fields and meadows back to Voorhout. Just over the railroad line, the conviviality awaits you where you can reminisce about this beautiful region.
