Cycle route around the Sneekermeer lake

Cycling along the Sneekermeer lake and through the Geeuwpolder.
This bicycle route starts at Cafe de Buorren in the village of Uitwellingerga. Together with Oppenhuizen, it is a twin village. This means that two villages arose close together and together actually form a whole. Locally, people speak of Top and Twel. You cycle past the town of Sneek to turn off towards Het Sneekermeer. This lake was created in the Middle Ages by peat extraction. In the middle runs a shallow part, a sand ridge called the Gravinneweg. People used to be able to cross the lake here at low tide. Actually the lake does not belong to Sneek but to De Friese Meren. During your bike ride you will be treated to the most beautiful views of water and vast polders. You can see many water, and migratory birds. In summer it is the godwits, lapwings and wagtails that come to breed and in winter the wigeon and barnacle geese winter at the Sneekermeer. Of course, when the weather is nice, many sailboats can be spotted. The waters in Friesland are known for water sports recreation. You will also cycle through the Geeuwpolder nature reserve. This is a summer polder which means it is flooded in the winter. The Geeuwpoldermolen and two American windmills ensure that the polder is dry in the summer by drainage. After cycling this watery route it is great to relax in Uitwellingerga.
