From Maasluis to the islands of Rozenburg and Voorne

Maasluis originated around 1340 as a settlement near a sluice built to prevent flooding. From Maasluis you drive from the Randstad into nature. With the ferry you cross over to the island of Rozenburg and later further to Voorne. Rozenburg is the only place on the island of Rozenburg. Along the Molenweg stands corn mill De Hoop. This was in use until the early 1960s. History can be felt on the island of Voorne. The many trade ships, but also warships called at the ports. When you arrive at Brielle, also known as Den Briel, you can probably already see it from the shapes of the city. Brielle is an old fortified town. The fortress of Brielle, most of which dates from the 17th century, is a national monument. Peasant families had settled on the islands, but they were regularly flooded by the North Sea and the Meuse. The families built dikes to be able to continue living there. This is how Brielle was formed with the many islands around it. In Oostvoorne, you can see Huis Overburgh, country house 't Reigernest, and the Jacoba Burcht. The Jacoba Burcht, also called Burcht van Voorne was a motte castle. The remains are located on a hill, a motte, to better see the enemy approaching. Already in the 17th century it became a ruin because the foundation was not strong enough. The village of Oostvoorne has no street names ending in -street at all. There are only roads, lanes, an occasional dike and paths. Through small towns and past vast meadows, it goes back to the ferry to make the crossing back to Maasluis.
