Leiden city of water and greenery

The route starts in the city of Leiden, where you can start by visiting the Burcht or the Rapenburg. On the Rapenburg is the academy building, of Leiden University. Via the districts of Hoge Mors and Stevenshof you cycle to Voorschoten, a village with as many as 103 national monuments. Some country houses and war monuments can also be found in Voorschoten. Through the district Vlietwijk you cycle to recreation area Vlietland. Here is and deep recreational lake, boating waters, swimming pools and two wooded islands: Koutereiland and Speckeiland. You cycle past Vogelplas Starrevaart, towards Stompwijk. Then the route goes past Zoetermeer, towards De Geer. At farm 't Geertje, you can see what the farm used to look like. Cattle are kept on a small scale and the farm regularly organizes various activities. In the Zoeterwoud polders you will see characteristic peat meadow landscape and, especially in the Weipoort, many monumental farms. Other places of interest are the Sint-Jan Onthoofdingkerk and the Dutch Reformed village church. You continue your route to Zoeterwoude-Rijndijk, home of Heineken brewery. The Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Onbevlevlekt-Ontvangkerk is also worth seeing here. Your bike tour ends again in Leiden, city of water and greenery. The inner city has many waters as canals and canals. A must is a visit to the Hofjes in Leiden, small houses with a common courtyard. Some of the 35 hofjes are open for visits.
