Marswal-Gaasterland route

There is much to see in southern Friesland. Friesland is known for its picturesque villages and hamlets and the occasional fortified town. Here in southern Friesland, the same is true. Nice villages and hamlets full of farms and country houses and the occasional church tower or chapel. Sloten is a beautiful fortified town on the Slotermeer lake. It lies on the eleven cities route and it connects the Slotermeer with the Steep Bank of the IJsselmeer. The history of this little town is therefore not insignificant and definitely worth a look. Another place of interest is the Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal. This is the largest steam pumping station ever built. The chimney is higher than 60 meters and it is now a protected building since it is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. But there is more to see in southern Frisian Gaasterland. Vast deciduous forests, meandering streams, cliffs, undulations in the landscape and, of course, a beautiful view of the IJsselmeer. Nature is rich in flora and fauna. Deer, geese, badgers are just a few of the animals found there. The large amount of dragonfly species in the Wyldemerk make the area complete. It is definitely worthwhile to go for a bike ride.
