Oosterwierum

Between Leeuwarden and Bolsward lies a beautiful piece of Friesland: Oosterwierum. The area around Oosterwierum is a typical Frisian environment. Neighborhoods and villages with church steeples in Neo-Gothic style alternate with beautiful, old-fashioned country houses and large farms. Between the villages you can cool your nose in the vast meadows of the Frisian countryside. A beautiful phenomenon among the vast plains are the terp villages. To prevent flooding at high tide, the houses are placed on an artificial mound. These villages were formed over the centuries and although many have disappeared, there are still hundreds left for you to visit during your bicycle tour. The village of Wieuwerd, too, was once a mound. This can still be seen by the mounds along the road. However, this village is more famous for the mummies that lie in the basement of the Reformed Church. These mummies were inexplicably created naturally. Set the bike aside to take a look if you like mystery. Furthermore, this is an excellent route to get away from all the hustle and bustle.
