Round Harlingen along the afsluitdijk

You start this bike route from Harlingen into the Frisian countryside. Residents of Harlingen are also called Tobbedansers or Ouwe Seunen. Once, Harlingen fur was produced; wool was made into clothing. When the Flemings fled, many settled in Harlingen. They took with them the custom of washing wool with bare feet in large tubs. This is where the name Tobbedans comes from. And among the natives of Harlingen, people address each other as \"Seun,\" or son. Ouwe Seun is thus the form of address and therefore people are known as Ouwe Seunen. Along and over the dike you cycle towards the afsluitdijk. You can enjoy the view of the Wadden Sea. This area is not on the UNESCO World Heritage List for nothing. During low tide, when the water is low, sandbanks fall dry. Birds and seals live here but both struggle. There are 250 species of plants. But fish also have a hard time, despite the warm water being a good place to spawn. At the afsluitdijk, you can try to see into North Holland. But even with clear weather, the other side turns out to be quite far away. Through the grasslands and agricultural allotment you cycle through a piece of Friesland with wide vistas. Through small towns and past large farms you will arrive in Franeker. Both Harlingen and Franeker belong to the Frisian Eleven Cities, the 11 places with city rights.
