Round trip along the Waal
A varied bicycle route over dikes and ferries, past floodplains, fortified towns and beautiful vistas.
Let yourself be carried along the meandering river Waal and discover the rich river landscape between Zaltbommel and Gorinchem. This varied bicycle route takes you over winding dikes, through villages such as Herwijnen, Brakel and Gameren, and past the historic city centers of Gorinchem and Zaltbommel. Along the way you pass several ferries that take you from one bank to the other, giving the route extra dynamics.
An absolute highlight on the route is Slot Loevestein, the imposing medieval castle where Hugo de Groot once managed to escape in a book chest. The castle is beautifully situated at the confluence of Maas and Waal and is well worth a visit for lovers of history.
In addition, enjoy the view of the floodplains, old farms, dike houses and grazing cows in the meadows. Along the way there are plenty of opportunities for a break on a terrace or a picnic by the water.
Highly recommended for those who love nature, history and water.
