This route through the magnificent South Limburg hills contains, in addition to many beautiful views, a challenge for the sporty cyclist.
Valkenburg, Schin op Geul, Berg en Terblijt and Sint Antoniusbank are a few beautiful and appealing names on this route through the extreme south of the country. Of course, cycling through the hills requires a bit more energy and effort but the reward is there. The highly touristy town of Valkenburg appears early in the history books, but Schin op Geul wins out with mentions dating back to the eighth century. The area contains many attractions, such as the ruins of Valkenburg Castle, numerous marl houses and, of course, many churches. In the village of Berg en Terblijt, the St. Monulphus and Gondulphus Church, although quite a mouthful, is well worth seeing. The first part of the route runs through the beautiful Geul valley, then turns south to return to Valkenburg via places like Margraten and Scheulder. Margraten in particular has gained a lot of fame for its large American cemetery. Furthermore, the cyclist will mainly enjoy the landscape, characterized by hills, streams with crystal clear water, beautiful forests and almost un-Dutch panoramas, in silence. The hospitality within the numerous attractive catering establishments in this area completes the picture.
