The Southern Gully Valley

The beauty of Valkenburg and its surroundings
If you like old castles and caves, South Limburg is obviously the place to be. This route through tourist attractions Valkenburg and Gulpen has more than enough castles, old farms, mansions and caves. The city walls, gates and marl houses along the Geul give the towns a medieval feel. But there is much more to see on this route through the southern Geul Valley. Valkenburg is rightfully the tourist highlight in the area. Besides the protected cityscape that has been preserved for many hundreds of years, there are a lot of city parks and nature parks in the immediate vicinity. Castle Valkenburg, Castle Den Halder, the many water mills and caves complete the picture. Gulpen, best known for its brewery, is where the Geul Valley ends and merges into the Gulpenberg. It is where the Geul and the Gulp meet. Here you can enjoy beautiful structures such as Neubourg castle, church buildings and mills. The breweries and castle of Wijlre, the Sint-Stefanus church and the castle of Wijnandsrade are also well worth seeing. As are the other villages on this route, Schin op Geul, Eys and Eyserheide. All this is set in a beautiful valley full of unique flora and fauna!
