A route along The IJssel and the Twente Canal

From the gardens of the farm, this bicycle route through the western part of Gelderse Achterhoek starts. At first the road still runs fairly straight past fields and meadows. But as soon as the river IJssel comes into sight you notice it immediately. The road is no longer straight. It winds parallel to the IJssel past large trees, through forests and around farms. The view keeps changing from a forest edge to fields or meadows and then suddenly a vista again. That's why the landscape of the Achterhoek is called a coulisse landscape; it looks like a stage with different scenery. You cross the Twente Canal and cycle along the water. In front of Eefde lock is the estate of Huis De Voorst. The Eefde lock is a national monument dating from 1933. Some 15,000 ships pass through here each year. On the bridge is an information point and you have a good view of the locks. Along the Twente Canal and back inland you can enjoy the tranquility of the Achterhoek in the province of Gelderland.
