For centuries, the area between the rivers Meuse and Waal has been battling with water. Since the Roman occupation 2000 years ago, people have been fighting the rising water to protect the meadows and polders. This results in exceptional landscapes, which are often so unique and characteristic of our small country. Along this route you will therefore encounter water and small islands everywhere. Wet meadows, marshes, willows and pastures color the landscape green and blue. Where water and land alternate through time, the food supply is also unique, of course. This means that many bird species come here to get their food. Ducks, Storks, geese, kingfishers and the blue tit are just some of the beautiful bird species you can see and hear along this scenic route.
The Protestant and Reformed backgrounds of the villages in the area give a picturesque appearance thanks to the local churches and lots. Steam pumping stations, Fort Sint Andries and some beautiful country houses have been of significant value to this area over time that have been well maintained for a long time by various land lords. In the distance, in good weather, you can even enjoy the view of Loevestein Castle!
