A bicycle route along Unesco World Heritage Site Kinderdijk

Streefkerk borders the river De Lek and has a marina. Several windmills are located in Streefkerk. Cycling along De Lek you enter Kinderdijk, where 740 years of water management can be seen. Everything here is below sea level so the windmills were badly needed to keep dry feet. The old windmills of UNESCO World Heritage Site Kinderdijk are worth a visit. Through the polders it goes towards Sliedrecht and along the river Beneden Merwede. Dredging was an early part of life here. Ditches were dug and dikes built to control the water. Only much later did Sliedrecht become known for its dredging companies. The route continues and shows you vast meadows with grassland or quietly grazing cows. You can enjoy the tranquility and the green landscape around you. Along the river De Giessen, the road leads you to Giessenburg and on to Groot-Ammers. This place is best known to many for its storks. By importing and captive breeding, the stork village Het Liesvelt was created. The young storks are released which has restored the population. Along the great shipping on The Lek it goes back to the starting point.
