A bicycle route around Waddinxveen

You will start this bicycle route that takes you past water, nature and culture. The Reeuwijkse Plassen are thirteen lakes between Bodegraven and Gouda. They are separated from each other by narrow roads. Here you cycle across with water on both sides. The lakes all have a rectangular shape. In this you can still see the former parceling of the peat lands. You pass the highway and come along defensive fortification Fort Wierickerschans. This was built in 1673 out of sheer necessity to prevent a repeat of the 1672 disaster year. Bodegraven is centrally located in the Green Heart, on both sides of the Old Rhine River. The place is known for its cheese trade and the Andrelon factory. Under the N11 through it continues to Boskoop. This area is known for its tree nurseries. Many hundreds are scattered over more than 1,000 acres with lots of ditches to provide enough water. You can learn more about them at the Tree Nursery Museum. The apple variety De Schone van Boskoop (also called goudrenet) most likely originated here. Along the river De Gouwe you cycle through an area of open fields, ponds and trees such as alders, birches, poplars, ash trees and elderberries to bring you back to Waddinxveen.
