A route along water and forest in Krimpenerwaard

Krimpen aan de IJssel is surrounded by water and natural areas. That there is so much beautiful nature just around the corner from Rotterdam is almost unfathomable. In the 1953 flood disaster, it became painfully clear that the open connection with the North Sea was a danger. It was decided to build the Hollandse IJssel storm surge barrier. The Algera Bridge over which you cycle became the first connection between Krimpenerwaard and the part of South Holland north of the IJssel in the late 1950s. You cross the Nieuwe Maas and ride upstream. Where the Nieuwe Maas, De Lek and Noord rivers meet, you board Het Driehoeksveer at Ridderkerk, De Schans. From May 1 to October 1, you can cross every half hour every day from 10:30-17:00. Krimpen is surrounded by three natural areas. To the east, along the peat meadow river the Loet, the Loetbos, has developed. There is even a silence area to allow animals and nature to develop peacefully. But humans can recover from that, too. The route continues along the Hollandsche IJssel for another stretch to lead back to the starting point along vast meadows.
