Across the borders of Drenthe and Groningen

Bike route De Punt takes you along the Zuidlaardermeer, across the borders of Drenthe and Groningen.
The village of De Punt is near the border of Drenthe and Groningen and you may know this village from a train hijacking in 1977. You cycle across the border of Groningen, via Blankeweer along the Zuidlaardermeer to Meerwijck. The Zuidlaardermeer is designated as Natura 2000, a European network of nature reserves. In Meerwijck you will find various recreational areas, for example, you can cross the Hunze River by bicycle ferry. You cycle on to Kropswolde, a former peat colony with monastic orders. Here take a look at Korenmolen De Hoop, this mill is still in operation. The route continues to Wolfsbarge, a hamlet in the municipality of Hoogezand-Sappemeer. Here you will find a cemetery of 14 acres, with war graves of the British Commonwealth. You cycle back into Drenthe, in the direction of De Groeve. In De Groeve, near the Zuidlaardermeer, there is an old building, from which people used to broadcast radio messages from the Warsaw Pact. Today this building is a youth center. The village you pass next, Midlaren, has two dolmens. You then cycle to Tynaarlo, a brink village where an old agricultural character has been preserved.
