Along the waters of the East

This route has a bit of everything. The water gates in Delfzijl and the Windmills in Winschoten. An area full of rich history from the Golden Age and French and German rule. In addition to many monuments, there are also bunkers to be found around the heavily fortified Delfzijl, for example. Also take a look at the ghost village of Weiwerd, where perhaps a few people still live. Or at the church of Nieuwolda with the mermaid on top. But that is by no means all. Between the two towns lies a beautiful patch of nature with lakes such as the Hondhalstermeer, De Tjamme or the Oldambtmeer, where the Blauwestad nature reserve is located. Many birds come here to breed and some even stay for the winter. So bird watching is possible all year round. In the Midwolder forest you can enjoy untouched nature, known for its many species of mushrooms. The area is full of plants and shrubs. Konik horses graze there all year round. In the Tjamme you will find all kinds of deer species, Scottish Highlanders and a large number of bird species. But don't forget the Dollard. Many plants, fish and birds found nowhere else in the Wadden Sea can be admired here from the dike. I would bring my binoculars!
