Around Duursche Waarden

The bike route starts from the old 1703 octagonal mill. You will pass the house de Gelder. This is first mentioned in 1382. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1913 and only a white marble sundial remains. On the estate there are still present a coach house, a bridge and an entrance gate that also belonged to it. The moat also remained intact. You drive along the vast meadows to the Duursche Waarden. This area was designated a nature development project in 1989. It covers 120 hectares and consists of river arms, marshes and pieces of forest in the floodplains of the river IJssel. The area is named after the nearby hamlet of Duur. River clay was mined there for centuries to make bricks. Fortmond is best known for the Fortmond brick factory that was located there from 1889 to 1976. The clay came to the factory via a narrow gauge railway. The brick kilns and the restored chimney are now national monuments. With the river IJssel in the distance, you cycle back to Wijhe.
