Around Winterswijk

Cycling through scenic countryside and the raised bog area of Vragenderveen.
The cycle route starts from Gastgalerij Ankomm'n and takes you into the Achterhoek landscape past nature and atmospheric villages. Winterswijk is a village where people already lived over 1000 years ago. In the museum Villa Mondrian, the parental home of Piet Mondrian displays work from his younger years. Through the center, you cycle towards recreation area 't Hilgelo. Here one of the three stone quarries is still in use. Mainly limestone is mined there. Eight different minerals have been found in a quarry yet to be visited. If you want to go digging, you can get information at the tourist office. You cycle around the water between the trees. After each corner, you get a brief view of the meadows. This demarcation of meadows is reminiscent of the wings of the theater. That is why this landscape of Gelderland is also called coulisse landscape. This area is rich in streams and you will pass the Ratumsebeek, Beurzerbeek, Roetenbeek and the Groenlosche Slinge, among others. Lichtenvoorde is a pleasant village with a cozy center. A delicious ice cream on the terrace or a drink inside to some shopping, it is all possible. You continue cycling through the moorland area of Vragenderveen, which is part of the Winterswijk National Landscape. The peat was used by farmers to extract peat. But by placing dams the water level is restored and so is nature. Enjoy the last piece of this beautiful landscape of Gelderland.
