Bicycle route around Bergumermeer

Enjoying the Frisian countryside.
Bergum is actually Burgum in Frisian and is known as wald- and wetterdoarp. The landscape you cycle through is also called a coulisse landscape. This means that it is a semi-open landscape that resembles a stage with coulisse due to the planting and buildings. You will ride past wooded banks and hedges that nature uses to create a yard separation, often also between pastures. You can enjoy the tranquility offered by the Frisian landscape and the friendliness of the Frisian inhabitants as you cycle through the villages. The Bergumermeer (Burgumer Mar in Frisian) is a popular lake for water sports. There is even a sailboat type named after it. You cross the river De Lits, which is the connection to the lake De Leijen. This was created by peat excavation and is therefore shallow in many places. It is owned by Staats Bosbeheer. Through these beautiful surroundings of Friesland you cycle back to the starting point.
