Bicycle route through the Achterhoek

From the quiet Spoorlaan, head toward Aalten for a brisk bike ride. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Aalten, like other places in the Achterhoek, had a thriving textile industry. Driving through the Achterhoek, you notice it immediately. The road is not straight but meanders. The view changes all the time. Sometimes you can see woods, then a farm, then fields. The landscape undulates to the horizon which gives an un-Dutch feeling. It looks just like a stage with different backdrops. That is why the landscape of the Achterhoek is called a coulisse landscape. You will drive through the center of Lichtenvoorde. In the marketplace of Lichtenvoorde stands a boulder weighing over 20,000 kg. This boulder was dragged there in 1874. The nickname \"Keistad\" will come as no surprise. After a quiet stretch past grazing cows and grasslands, you drive through the center of Winterswijk. Here you will find the Villa Mondriaan museum, old churches and the most historic street De Lappenbrink, now called Nieuwstraat. The old name is a reference to the textile industry. Winterswijk has many cozy opportunities to take a rest before the final stretch of cycling.
