Braassemermeer and Wijde Aa: the watery Green Heart
Braassemermeer and Wijde Aa shows how water-rich the Green Heart is with its many lakes, ponds and watercourses.
Braassemermeer and Wijde Aa starts in the municipality of Kaag and Braassem, in Roelofarendsveen. Here you can enjoy a cup of coffee on a cozy terrace along the inland waterways. Once on your bike, head towards Oude Wetering, where a ferry will take you to the other side of the water Wetering. On the other side you are in Leimuiden where you cycle towards Rijnsaterwoude, partly along the shores of the Braassemermeer. This lake is well known to many water sports enthusiasts, due to its many marinas and water sports clubs. In winter, the lake is popular with ice sailors. Arriving in Langeraar, a village in the municipality of Nieuwkoop, you cycle along the next water, the Langeraarse Plassen. Here you can enjoy all the flora and fauna via a peat dike with the lakes on two sides.
You are now in Paperveer where you cycle to Woubrugge, back in the municipality of Kaag and Braassem. The route continues towards the water again, where you cycle along the Woudwetering and the Wijde Aa. This elongated lake connects the Braassemermeer with the Does. Via Hoogmade you cycle along the other side of the Wijde Aa to Roelofarendsveen, also called the Flower of the Randstad, where you will find a beautiful bike path along the Braassemermeer. You will cycle past a picturesque lock, where if you are lucky you can exactly see a boat lock. Then you cycle through the village, past a water tower with a large picture of a tulip on it, back to your starting point.
