Culture and nature around Opheusden

This bike route takes you past the Roman watchtower at Fort De Spees (the fort is no longer visible) in Opheusden. This replica was built at De Linie campsite, but now stands on the northern border of the Roman Empire on the Rijnband dike. This area was once home to many such watchtowers. You continue cycling towards Hemmen where the ruins of Hemmen Castle are located with still beautiful gardens worth visiting. The route also takes you past numerous orchards with fruit trees and even an organic wine grower. In National Fruit Park Ochten you can take a look for free. During your tour, you will regularly see De Waal, up close or from a distance. The Waal is by far the water-rich arm of the Rhine in the Netherlands with 65% of the water discharge and also the main one for shipping. The total length of the Waal is 82 kilometers. While enjoying the vistas over this part of the Nerder-Betuwe you will be back at the starting point to enjoy the peace and quiet there as well.
