Enjoying nature in the Veluwe

The De Beken lunchroom is located along the Mill Creek. Here there is still water in the stream. Further towards the Lower Rhine, the stream is dry or overgrown, but for the surrounding area it is still an important place. Even so important that the former industrial area has made way for nature. However, there is still a monument reminding of the paper industry which was very important. You cycle through the Veluwe with mainly forest, heath and sandy plains. The area was formed in the penultimate ice age, about 150,000 years ago. Rivers had left gravel and sand behind and the ice pushed it up into moraines. Many streams still run to the lower elevations. You can encounter various animals, including wild boar and deer. But there are also wisents walking and you may see a raven flying. People have lived there which can be traced from the burial mounds dating back to the 12th century. Cycling along the Hoge Veluwe National Park, you pass the entrance to the Kroller-Muller museum. To preserve nature as it is, management is active. Without intervention, plants and animals would disappear. All the more reason for you to enjoy this wonderful piece of the Netherlands.
