Fine bicycle tour around Markelose mountain

The starting point of the route is at nature reserve the Borkeld and recreational lake the Domelaar. Forests and heaths form the backdrop here, with large quantities of junipers as a special feature. From this area, the trail heads south, overlooking the large 1959 television tower just outside Markelo. The trail runs partly along the Schipbeek, a riparian river of the IJssel and important for the supply of the nearby Twente Canal, the shipping link important to this region between Twent and the IJssel near Zutphen and dug largely by hand in the 1930s Passing through the village of Stokkum, it heads north to the town of Goor, with many places of interest. Goor was completely rebuilt after WWII and many memories are preserved in the Goor Historical Museum, beautifully housed in the former station building. Also worth seeing are the Braakmolen and a nice clog museum. Through the villages of Elsener Broek and Schoolbuurt we cycle back to Markelo with the mountain of the same name as a defining feature of the landscape. The mountain is in fact a hill of about 40 meters height, created in the ice age by uplift of the earth's crust. The area is also home to several fascinating country houses available for viewing, such as Weldam Castle and a number of monumental farmhouses.
