Green route through The Gelderse Poort

From Millingen along the river Waal through the landscape of nature reserve De Gelderse Poort.
From Koffie- en Eethuis De Gelderse Poort you drive into the beautiful landscape of Gelderland. You will soon arrive at the first ferry. Make sure to bring a few euros for the ferry crossings. The surroundings of Millingen are characterized by riverbanks and rivers. You will cross the river Bijlands Kanaal. Through the green area you cycle to Pannerden where you cross with the next ferry to Doornenburg. Here you can briefly deviate from the route to visit Fort Pannerden. It is hidden under the earth but is five stories high. Some parts are free to visit. You continue cycling along the river Waal. Views of meadows and water alternate while you can see the shipping traffic passing by. Across the Waal you cycle through the greenest part where wild horses and cattle roam. In this nature reserve, natural processes are allowed to take their course and the floodplains are used to store water at high tide. Old gullies are used, giving nature an impulse to develop. Along the Bizon Bay and the Kaliwaal you cycle back to Millingen aan de Rijn. There you can reminisce about this wonderful route overlooking the water.
