Lovely piece of cycling around Leersum

The starting point of this trail is near the village of Leersum, beautifully situated in a valley of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and endowed with a rich history and many attractions. Zuilenstein Castle on the mountain of the same name is one of the most famous attractions, with the current version rebuilt in 1980, as a recovery operation after the Allied bombing of 1945. The route heads west toward the hamlet of Breedeveen and the seigniory of Darthuizen through a beautiful, leafy and rolling forest landscape, then turns to the banks of the Lower Rhine. The most important and colorful place here is Wijk bij Duurstede. The town used to be called Doresstad and was a very important trading post in Roman times, many remnants of which are still preserved and can be admired, among other things, in the Dorestad museum. On this route, the river landscape forms a unique alternation with the wooded part, up to Amerongen, where the route changes again to the hilly part of the Amerongse berg. The cyclist can enjoy the versatility of this relatively young forestry area, which has a good number of attractive resting points. Via the village of Overberg, with some beautiful, monumental farmhouses of the \"langhuis\" type, we return to Leersum via a varied stage.
