Touring the polders above Harmelen

This fine bicycle route runs through the area above Harmelen in the province of Utrecht and leads the cyclist past beautiful spots dominated by deposits of the Old Rhine, a remnant of the former Rhine, which further flows into the North Sea via Woerden and Katwijk. The eastern side of the route, near Vleuten, is partly defined by the Leidsche Rijn. The area formed the border of the empire in Roman times and this fact is reflected through not only deposits but also excavations of Roman ships found here. It is also known that a number of army posts were located here. The route passes through villages such as Kamerik, Kanis and Kockengen to return to the starting point after a round of Vleuten. The route is teeming with national monuments; Kamerik alone has about twenty of them, giving the route a stamp of its rich cultural and historical history. Finally, the cyclist passes the Brediusbos, a beautiful area right above Woerden including an immense carp pond.
