Round the Lek

A route along De Lek and through the silver town of Schoonhoven.
The bicycle route starts in Schoonhoven and takes you along De Lek. The Lek has a length of 62 kilometers. The river is an important part of the main stream of the Rhine and thus important for shipping between Rotterdam and Germany. You can probably see the necessary ships passing by. You drive in the direction of Lekkerkerk. This area used to be known for its many hemp crops. This was used to make the ropes in shipping. Nowadays there is mostly cattle breeding and grassland. Through the meadows, the route goes to Schoonhoven, the smallest municipality in the Netherlands, also known as the silver city. In the Zilvermuseum you can see, feel, smell and hear the silver. Schoonhoven's town hall has a carillon with as many as fifty bells. If a melody is played there, you will stand still for a moment.
