Round the Tjeukemeer and Groote Brekken

Enjoy tranquility and vistas along Frisian waters and grasslands.
From Lemmer you start this bicycle route. Lemmer is a town in the municipality of De Friese Meren. It was already mentioned in the early 14th century. But only later did a real settlement grow at the mouth of the inland waters in the Zuiderzee. This turned out to be the perfect place for merchants and craftsmen. Thanks to its fleet of 146 ships, Lemmer became an important fishing town for the Netherlands. The Groene Draeck, the sailing ship of Princess Beatrix, is a Lemster Aak; a traditional sailing ship from Lemmer. You cycle in the direction of the Tjeukemeer. This is the largest inland water in Friesland. It is not equally deep everywhere. On the north side it is sometimes only one meter deep. Friesland originally has a distinctly agricultural character. You can therefore enjoy the vastness and typical vistas that the landscape offers. The polders, the villages, the water and the greenery; you will not get tired of it.
