Tour of the head of Friesland

This bike route offers a wonderful opportunity to explore the hidden gems of Northeast Friesland, from the small but charming Waaxens to the historic town of Dokkum. Waaxens may be small, with only 30 to 40 inhabitants, but the atmosphere is grand with its sprawling gardens that enrich a quick passage. After leaving Waaxens, the route takes you along winding paths and offers impressive vistas. Arriving in Dokkum, known as one of the Frisian Eleven Cities, you will experience the rich history this city has to offer. Dokkum is famous not only for the tragic death of Boniface but also as the home of the spicy Sonnema Berenburg. A break in the old town to soak up the local atmosphere is not to be missed. The route continues its way through vast grasslands and past robust farms, leading to the coast. Cycling behind or even on the dike gives a unique perspective of the sea, and in clear weather you can even spot Ameland in the distance. The path then takes you back through Holwerd, where parts of the village are protected because of its historical importance, to finally end up back in Waaxens. This bike route is a perfect blend of nature, culture and history, ideal for anyone who wants to experience the real Friesland.
