Vast landscapes from Vianen to Culemborg

Vianen is a fortified town. The municipality of Vianen is the only Utrecht municipality south of the river Lek. The bicycle route heads southeast. You ride along De Lek and get an impression of the landscape around the river. Past the town of Everdingen is Fort Everdingen. The fort was built between 1842 and 1845 at the T-junction between the Diefdijk and the Lekdijk. This was to reinforce the New Dutch Waterline. Together with Fort Honswijk on the other side, Fort Everdingen closed off access to the Lek. This prevented the enemy from breaking through the Water Line via the river or over the dikes. The locks of Fort Everdingen have been restored and even received a first prize for this. In the direction of Culemborg you will drive into Gelderland. The history of Culemborg goes back to 1281. As you cycle through the city you can see the city park De Plantage, designed in 1850, the Elisabeth Orphanage, the RK Barbara church and other monumental buildings. A break on one of the terraces is a good plan. The route continues back to Utrecht and you can enjoy the vast landscape so characteristic of this part of the Netherlands.
