Winding through the Achterhoek

Until 1875, Sinderen had a real castle. After it was sold, it was demolished and a number of farms were built from the stones. These can be recognized by their white color. The historic Antonius chapel near the former castle of Sinderen is an attraction and recently completely refurbished. Sinderen is surrounded by the nature reserves Wissink and Idink-Nibbelinkbos. You cycle towards Ulft. In addition to the village of the same name, Ulft consists of two hamlets: Oer (Ulft north) and De Pol. Oer is the nickname for the north of Ulft, and is so called because of the iron (primal) in the ground. Oer was also home to the DRU, an iron foundry. As you cycle by, you can cross the little bridge into the grounds and visit Icer, an innovation center and iron museum. Driving through the Achterhoek you will notice it immediately. The road is not straight but meanders. The view changes all the time. Sometimes you can see woods, then a farm, then fields. The landscape undulates to the horizon which gives an un-Dutch feeling. It looks just like a stage with different backdrops. That is why the landscape of the Achterhoek is called a coulisse landscape.
