Woerden and the Nieuwkoop lakes

For castle lovers, Woerden is the place to be. The castle of Woerden and the adjacent Sint Bonaventura Church sometimes look very fairytale-like. And that makes sense, since the history of Woerden goes all the way back to Roman times. Other lovely villages along this bike route are Zegveld, a breeding ground for storks and De Meije, with the Pietje Potlood water tower. Not to be missed along this route. Then you have the Sint Hippolytuskerk in Kanis, as well as in Kamerik. Across the border of the province of Utrecht are the Nieuwkoopse plassen. A swampy area in the middle of the Green Heart. A special nature reserve. Orchids, carnivorous plants and other flowers and plants that provide a great explosion of colors every spring! The Nieuwkoopse Plassen also caters to the bird lover. Each season has its own species of birds. Some species come here to breed, others come again to hibernate. Although the area is full of rodents, foxes and otters, you can occasionally spot a roe deer, as they are very good swimmers!
