Cycling in Rijssen
Rijssen lies at the foot of the Sallandse Heuvelrug, which by Dutch standards is genuine hill country. West of the town the ground rises towards the Holterberg. East begins the hedgerow landscape of Twente, with its tree banks, small fields and sandy tracks.
Seven routes run through Rijssen. The shortest is 23 kilometres and stays close to home, through the woods and heath around the town. The longest is 66 kilometres and heads out into the Twente hedgerow country. In between are routes over the Sallandse Heuvelrug and around the Markelose berg, where the going rolls and the view changes with every bend.
The area sits on the border of Overijssel and Gelderland, and the landscape shows it: more open to the south, more wooded to the north. In season the heather on the ridge is in flower.
Along the way you pass Holten, Nijverdal, Markelo, Borkeld, Notter, Elsen and Elsenerbroek. Start at junctions 73, 80, 81, 84 and 87 to 90. Brasserie UIT is there for a break.
