A route through the Gelderland countryside around Tonden
Cycling along the Bussloo recreational lake and the IJssel River.
Tonden is a hamlet in the Dutch municipality of Brummen and consists mainly of farms. The bicycle route goes into the beautiful countryside of Gelderland. You ride west through the Empese nature reserve and the Tonden heath. You will be treated to beautiful vistas of heathland, marshland, forest and grassland. The area is home to rare animals such as the crested newt, the golden grasshopper and the heather blue. Past Klein Amsterdam and Klarenbeek, you drive to Bussloo. This is a recreational lake with an area of 100 hectares and is about 12 meters deep. There are a total of eight beaches around the lake where you can take a swim or just sit on a terrace. Meandering through the green landscape, you cycle to De IJssel. The IJssel is a branch of the Rhine and has a total length of about 125 km. Due to expected climate change, the capacity of the IJssel will be increased between 2006 and 2019 by digging side channels, among other things. In Hoven, you can decide to cross the water for an outing to Zutphen. The route will take you back to Tonden.
